NEW!: Even more Resident Evil: Last Survivors fan-fics can be found here!
Welcome to this new fan-fiction section of The Necropolis. However, this marks a rather different spin on the fan-fiction idea, as The Necropolis is looking for a certain kind of fan-fic (as reflected in the design of this section) that anyone, regardless of literary talent (or lack of), can have a go at, or you can just read what others do.
The idea behind Resident Evil: Last Survivors stems from the documents, diaires, letters and notes that always feature in the games, strewn around offices, laboratories, barracks and abandoned buildings...These files make up a large part of the appeal of the Resident Evil series. Some offer simple information like passcodes, item locations or puzzle solutions, others reveal background information on events, creatures or characters. And then there's all the poignant final writings of the now-deceased...
This is where you lot come in. The Necropolis wants you to write your own file that you could find in a Resident Evil game, except, of course, you wrote it yourself. In case you need a bit of inspiration, here's an example of one such file from Resident Evil Zero:
Management Trainee's Diary
What is it that Director Marcus is researching all the time?
And what's with his weird interest in leeches?
Interest...?
Seems more like love at times...
Rumor has it that there's something dangerous about those leeches.
It is true that when Dennis just touched one he got ill with a fever.
Again today...
There were those horrible moans. Beyond that door.
"Let sleeping dogs..."
No way I'l go near them.
Even if the Director tells me, I no want to end up like Dennis.
That poor bastard.
Scratching and scratching.
Makes me itch jost watching him.
Must maybe go
IF can but hwo
Dennis gone. I go
Hungry...
Help
Mom.
Creepy file, eh? Well, think you can do something similar? Below are a few tips, rules and pointers to get you started...
Your Last Survivors piece can be in any form or about anything as long as it fits into the Resident Evil ethos, i.e. could realistically appear in a Resident Evil game. Picture where it would be found, who would be writing and for what purpose (what about a journalist reporting on the T-Virus epidemic in Raccoon City found in an old newspaper?)
The piece should be your work only and should not be copied in whole or part from anyone else or a Resident Evil game/book/comic. However, you are allowed to write about events, locales or characters in the Resident Evil universe, or even write from the position of a familiar character. In fact, The Necropolis recommends this as a starting point for those at a loss...
Try to make it interesting. Don't just submit a piece about a guard having lost his key or a password change (unless it can be done in an interesting way). In this respect, journals, newspaper articles and investigative reports make good forms to write in.
The Necropolis witholds the right to alter the spelling, punctuation and grammar to improve the quality of presentation, or edit material it regards as obscene or offensive. This is for the benefit of both the author and the readership. Otherwise, the piece is solely the property of the author and not of The Necropolis.
Where possible, indicate if any particular graphological features or deliberate misspelling have been used (e.g., the above piece has various grammatical and spelling mistakes to show the gradual infection of the writer). Otherwise, I'll correct everything and it'll lose it's impact. D'oh!
Your work should keep to a similar length to documents found in the game (100-200 words), should carry a simple descriptive title (e.g. Engineer's Report) and you should provide the name of the author (i.e. yourself, though preferred psuedonyms to conceal identity are allowed).
The piece should be sent as an attachment in Notepad or within the email itself to mail@the-necropolis.co.uk. Its not really a competition so don't fear judgement (though I won't stick any old crap on the site - there's enough on it already!), just send 'em in. They'll be collected and sorted and stuck up in the Resident Evil: Last Survivors section of the site, found in extras.
